The overwhelming popularity of Black Myth: Wukong in China marks "a significant shift" in the global video gaming landscape, as studios on the mainland now aim to compete in the industry's AAA space, according to market research firm Niko Partners.
The hit action role-playing game – developed by Tencent Holdings-backed studio Game Science and based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West – has sold at least 4.5 million copies since its release on Tuesday for the PlayStation 5 console and Windows-based personal computers.
Black Myth: Wukong also broke the record to become the most-played title of its kind on its launch day on digital gaming service Steam, where it recorded 1.4 million concurrent players in the first three hours of its release, surpassing the world’s most popular single-player games, including Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3.
"The broader implications of this success cannot be overlooked," Niko Partners said in an analysis on Wednesday of the game's August 20 launch. "It signals that Chinese studios are ready to compete directly with established Western and Japanese developers in the premium AAA space."
